Is a Former Loaner Car Right for Me?

Mercedes-Benz at Herb Chambers sells a lot of different types of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.  All three of our locations have the newest models available, as well as a variety of certified and pre-owned vehicles available. We also sell former loaner cars, which spend a short time in our dealerships and are then available for sale.  We get a lot of questions about these vehicles, so I sat down with our sales team to try to answer them for you while you’re browsing our inventory in the comfort of your home.

What is a former loaner car?

Loaner cars are given out to service clients whose cars will be in the shop for a longer than a few hours. Every situation is different, but they are usually driven for a day or two.  The cars are all new and current models. We even have some 2017s coming out of service soon!

How is a loaner car different than a rental car?

Typically, with rental cars, only minimal maintenance is done and drivers can really beat the cars up.  Anybody can get a rental car.  Here, loaner cars are only for our customers, which means that every single one has been driven by a fellow Mercedes-Benz owner.  Each customer only drives the car for a short time, so the total distance driven by each person is fairly limited.  Afterwards, the vehicle is fully detailed and inspected before the next person drives it.

How long is a loaner car in the fleet? What about mileage?

Loaner cars are typically active for 3-5 months.  The mileage varies, but is usually between 3,000 and 6,000 miles.  All of our loaner cars are given a full inspection and detail before they are offered for sale.

What’s the difference between a loaner car and a certified vehicle?

A certified pre-owned vehicle is just that – it’s been registered to someone else before. As with all pre-owned vehicles, they cannot be leased.

A loaner car, however, is still considered “new” because it’s never been registered.  Just like any new car, loaner vehicles can be purchased OR they can be leased.  Since all of our loaner vehicles are from the current model year, leasing allows you to take advantage of incredible offers, driving home in a practically new car at a more affordable price point. Additionally, if you prefer, we can offer the vehicle as a certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz.

What are the benefits of a loaner car?

Aside from the cost savings we just discussed, you get the same benefits as any other lease: you get to drive a new car! At the end of your lease term, you’ll have the option of purchasing the car or turning in for another lease.

Since your vehicle is still covered under its new car warranty, you’ll be able to take advantage of the benefits of Mercedes-Benz ownership, including Roadside Assistance! With Roadside Assistance, you get 24/7/365 assistance whenever you need it the most.  The Roadside Assistance team can jump a dead battery, give you a few gallons of gas to get to the closest gas station, and help change a flat tire.  In the event of an accident, Roadside Assistance can even arrange for a tow to the neatest authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership.  To learn more about Roadside Assistance, click here.
